ARTIST 01-ANNIE LEIBOVITZ

Updated: Jul 4, 2020

Annie Leibovitz is an American photographer who is famous for her captivating portrait photography involving many celebrities with her most iconic being a Polaroid of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, taken five hours before Lennon's murder, featured on the front cover of rolling stones magazine. Leibovitz’s signature style of a crisp and well lighted image creates a dramatic and conceptual effect to the image enhancing the model’s physical appearance.

I chose Leibovitz to be my artist because I love the sheer simplicity of her images as the models wear simplistic clothing , usually black/ dark colours which separate both the body and face making them stand out, and that she often shoots in black and white which can eliminate colour clashes in backgrounds as well as give the image an overall more dramatic effect. The image above is one of my favourites as I like the effect of the clothing blending into the backdrop as well as the hair which makes the models facial features more predominant especially with the help of harsh lighting making her cheekbones and eyes deep set. Moreover, I am a fan of incorporating hands and certain objects to have an appearance on or over the face as it adds more character to the image and takes up excess compositional space.
